The Big Bournemouth Treasure Trail

This event took place from 28th June until 3rd July throughout Bournemouth. It consisted of a series of clues representing aspects of the Bournemouth crest. The clues were hidden around town and families were challenged to find them.

Autumn Celebration Concert

We are planning to hold a big celebration of music, drama and dance at the Bournemouth International Centre on October 15th 2010, featuring all the schools that have taken part in the Smugglers 2010 project. Some of the Schools’ work will be exhibited in the BIC and the concert will feature performances by the children along with music from sections of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra augmented by young musicians. More details later.

Your School

Many local schools have already started their own treasure trails and smugglers activities. All local schools should have received a starter pack with ideas and support material to help with individual projects. If you haven’t had yours yet please contact heathertorrens@bethany.bournemouth.sch.uk.

Activities can range from treasure trails, photo trails, sessions in song and dance, poetry, and much, much more. – and there’s plenty of help and support available. For a list of support opportunities please click here.

Streets of Bournemouth

The Streets of Bournemouth is a virtual museum, tracing the story of the town's growth over the last 200 years. Through maps, images and themes, it traces the town’s two hundred year history. The virtual museum will continue to evolve through its interactive wiki element where you can add your own photographs and stories about Bournemouth. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project is being developed by Bournemouth University and Bournemouth Borough Council (Bournemouth Libraries and Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum). The ‘Streets of Bournemouth’ will become the first online museum devoted to the town's history, and will also form a central part of celebrations to mark the town’s bicentenary in 2010.

Visitors to the website will be able to see how their own street developed by clicking down through a layer of historical maps. They’ll also be able to call up associated images and information about Bournemouth’s people and buildings, its development as a health and seaside resort, and many other defining aspects of the town’s story.

Apart from a gallery of 7,500 images, a series of comparative maps and defining themes, the website also holds a learning package designed for use by primary school teachers and learners. It will be supported by Bournemouth in a Box, a physical collection of resources delivered to every primary school in Bournemouth. It is a contribution to encourage children to develop a passion for their local and family history.
